The Problem of Shade: BA Architecture

1:1 Live Build Series 2018-19

Installation in Middle Mill Car Park and Gallery surrounds

This 1:1 project in first year is a good example of the architectural ethos of Kingston School of Art. Here the ability of architects to negotiate between ideal and real, to act in continuity with architectural culture while being firmly sited in the current moment is manifestly present. This culture is an enabling one, allowing students find their strength be it in the managing a team, researching in the library, workshop or studio, or capturing and documenting the work.Prof. Andrew Clancy, Dept. of Architecture & Landscape

For 2018-19, the 1:1 project will tackle the problem of shade. Within an accelerated changing climate context, many social and educational outdoor spaces have been forced to retreat indoors, preventing both the extension of the curriculum outdoors and use of external play areas. We will pose thoughts in how the architecture of shading structures could help mitigate this.
