Stanley Picker Gallery is delighted to welcome A-Level Art, Craft & Design students from Grey Court Sixth Form in Ham, to develop new art and design works inspired by the gallery’s current exhibition “You say Volvo, I say Potato…” Outcomes will be showcased onsite in the Stanley Picker Gallery Project Studio 10-17 November 2018, with a celebration event on Wednesday 14, 4-7pm.
At Grey Court, Art is about ‘self-determination, motivation, and using every opportunity to find a means to express personal ideas in a style that suits your message. Students are required to produce practical work, reflective visual research and make visits to galleries’.
Throughout the day, with activity tailored to meet the interests and requirements of individuals, the students will explore themes of use, craftsmanship, and nostalgia, through experimental print, sculpture and sound. Students will undertake a guided tour of the gallery and exhibition, accompanied by print-making activities. Following this, the young designers will be faced with the challenge of transforming a broken Grey Court School piano into a ‘potato’ – a tool for the fabrication of new art and design objects, much like Michael Marriott printed the volvo. Outcomes will be exhibited, alongside what remains of the piano, in Stanley Picker Gallery Project Studio, for students to document for their portfolios, and for the public to muse over until 17 November.
