Contemporary culture is influenced by rapid technological change and this has had a profound effect on how we envisage, produce, transmit, receive and understand messages, data and information. In this exhibition text forms the basis of critical making in graphic design, not as a direct illustration of a text but as an interpretation, translation, and re-reading to expose the tensions between theory and the practice of visual communication.

Through the lens of critical design the MA Communication Design: Graphic Design (MA CDGD) cohort interrogate and respond to key texts by artists, critics and researchers such as Hito Steyerl, bell hooks, Ben Bratton, Stuart Hall, Yuk Hui, Max Bruinsma. The MA CDGD students present new works at the Stanley Picker Gallery through interactive, filmic, visual, narrative, material, and oral means.

MA CDGD introduces students to an expanded mode of graphic design, explored through experimental practice and critical thinking.

Students tackle issues such as: urbanism / identity / power / voice / time / climate change / art / AI gender / culture / sustainability.

Through practice, theory, research and debate we seek to challenge conventional design concepts and methods to produce radical future-facing outcomes, anticipating the needs and possibilities of tomorrow.
