Get Creative: Create your own unusual perspective

Ab Rogers Design A Day in the Life of Ernesto Bones (2011). Photography John Short

Each week that we are closed to the public due to Covid-19, the Stanley Picker Gallery and our partner venue Dorich House Museum are sending out weekly newsletters highlighting previous projects, collection items and activity suggestions to keep you inspired and creative at home. Sign up to receive the newsletters via our homepage.

As we spend time at home this week, we have been reminded of Ab Rogers’ Stanley Picker Fellowship project, which involved documenting some of Stanley Picker’s own household objects in The Picker House in Kingston, designed by architect Kenneth Wood in 1968. You can learn more about the house here.

The various domestic objects selected for Ab’s project included light switches, a cocktail shaker, a vintage record cover and a jar of coloured toothpicks (above). Inspired by the Surrealist’s adaptation of the game Consequences (Exquisite Corpse’), each image was given to one of 24 different creative practitioners including chef Heston Blumenthal, illustrator Sara Fanelli and fashion designer Shelley Fox, to each respond in turn with their own account of one hour in the life of fictional character Ernesto Bones. The team at Ab Rogers Design then created a gallery installation of 24 brand new objects representing Ernesto’s story. Read more about the project and see images and a video of the final exhibition here.

Why not try experimenting with your own unusual perspective? Whatever your age, just grab your phone, camera or sketch pad and capture a new perspective on something everyday in your home.
