Two events in February are specially planned to engage local artists who live in and around Kingston upon Thames; a film screening at the Stanley Picker Gallery showing the history of Kingston School of Art, and a special Love Artists weekend at Dorich House Museum to celebrate Valentine’s.
Visitors are invited to Love Artists weekend (Thur 11 – Sat 13 Feb) at Dorich House Museum, to enjoy the beautiful Grade II listed building for free and celebrate the lives of sculptor Dora Gordine and her husband the Hon. Richard Hare. Sited on Kingston Vale along the Southern edge of Richmond Park, the couple romantically named the house Dorich by combining of their two first names; Dora and Richard. Visitors are invited to explore the beautiful studio home with Gordine’s work on display in the setting where it was originally created, and the impressive Russian collection acquired by the couple whilst living in the house. Showing in the Stanley Picker Gallery Lobby from 9-13 February, visitors will be able to learn about the history of their local art school in the film Thinking through Making: 140 Years of Kingston School of Art, premiered at the ICA in November 2015. Directed by David Kew, the film charts the history of the School through designers and artists such as Archibald Knox, Reginald Brill, Daphne Brooker, John Carter, David Nash, Helen Storey, Fiona Banner and Mike Nelson, offering an insight into the special atmosphere of the Art School, their role in society, and their future. The research is led by Kingston University’s Professor Fran Lloyd and Dr Robert Knifton.
